Fri Oct 04 17:57:00 UTC 2024: ## Illinois Senate Republicans Demand Audit of Child Welfare Agency Amidst Abuse Allegations
**SPRINGFIELD, IL** – Calls for an independent audit of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) are growing following a wave of new allegations of abuse and misconduct within the agency.
The latest accusations center around Aunt Martha’s Integrated Care Center, a taxpayer-funded agency facing thousands of reports of violence, including alleged sexual and physical abuse of children. Injustice Watch, a non-profit news agency, has reported that these allegations also include conflicts of interest.
Illinois Senate Minority Leader John Curran, R-Downers Grove, has demanded an independent audit, stating that the executive branch investigation is insufficient. “The families of these children deserve answers, and the people of Illinois deserve to know how their tax dollars are being used,” Curran said.
The allegations come amidst three lawsuits filed in September detailing alleged abuse of hundreds of children across the state from 1996 to 2021. Governor J.B. Pritzker acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and expects further lawsuits.
However, concerns remain about the handling of these allegations, as one state employee facing accusations reportedly remains employed by the agency. Pritzker, while acknowledging the need for investigation, declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit or individual cases.
DCFS, which costs taxpayers over $2.3 billion annually, has long faced criticism for its operations and previous allegations of abuse. This new wave of accusations highlights the need for comprehensive reform and accountability within the agency.
