**New York, September 22nd, 2023:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his first day in the US, following the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, by addressing a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, New York.
Modi, who arrived in New York after the Quad summit, delivered a speech at the community event, highlighting India’s growth and progress. He also touched upon the importance of the Indian diaspora’s contribution to both India and the US. This visit marks PM Modi’s first trip to the US since his re-election earlier this year.
During the Quad summit, Modi, along with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, pledged to collaborate with US President Joe Biden on a new initiative to train doctors in the Indo-Pacific region to screen for cervical cancer. This initiative comes as a result of a Cancer Moonshot event in Delaware, where President Biden highlighted the need for screening and vaccination to combat the disease that claims the lives of 150,000 women in the region.
The Quad Leaders’ Summit also focused on strengthening partnerships and addressing global challenges. The group, which also includes the United States, released a joint statement, the Wilmington Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region based on the rule of law.
Further, the leaders expressed concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine, underscoring the importance of adhering to international law and respecting principles of the UN Charter. They also called for a two-state solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, urging a ceasefire and the return of hostages.
Modi also met with President Biden during the summit, discussing the deepening ties between the two countries. In an official fact sheet, the White House lauded Modi’s historic visits to Poland and Ukraine and his message of peace and support for Ukraine.
PM Modi presented President Biden with a silver-antique train model as a gift, while First Lady Jill Biden received a pashmina shawl.
On Sunday, September 23rd, Modi will address the UN’s Summit of the Future before returning to India. He will also hold key bilateral meetings during his stay in New York.
This visit to the US marks a significant step in India’s diplomatic engagement, showcasing the country’s growing global influence and reaffirming its commitment to international cooperation.
