**Sevenoaks, Kent** – A serious lorry fire on the M25 clockwise carriageway between junctions 5 and 6 caused major traffic delays on Friday morning, with motorists facing up to three hours of congestion.
Two lanes were closed at one point, leading to 11 miles of tailbacks. The delays extended onto the A25 through Sundridge, Oxted, and Godstone.
As of 2:15 PM, one lane remained closed with 30-minute delays due to three miles of backed-up traffic. Additionally, westbound traffic on the M26 leading up to the M25 at junction five was also affected, experiencing delays of approximately 55 minutes.
Surrey Police were alerted to the incident at around 1:30 AM. Fire and rescue services extinguished the blaze by 3:15 AM.
National Highways reported that the lorry’s load had been removed and clean-up work was underway following the vehicle’s transport to a recovery van. Resurfacing work, necessary due to the fire damage, will be completed overnight, though the road is not expected to close fully. All lanes are expected to be open throughout the day once recovery work is complete.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no casualties.
National Highways is advising motorists to plan extra time for their journeys.
The incident follows separate planned lane widening works on the M25 at junction 10, taking place overnight from September 9-12. These works include upgrading CCTV and lighting and waterproofing the two northbound tunnels. The road is closed clockwise leading up to the Dartford crossing.
