**Paris, France -** TotalEnergies SE is making strategic moves to solidify its global LNG market position, securing new agreements in China, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
The French energy giant has extended its existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with China’s CNOOC for an additional five years. This deal will see TotalEnergies deliver 1.25 million tons of LNG per year to China until 2034. Gregory Joffroy, Senior Vice President for LNG at TotalEnergies, emphasized the importance of this deal, stating it “strengthens its long-term position in the growing Chinese market.”
TotalEnergies is also expanding its footprint in Turkey, signing a heads of agreement (HoA) with BOTAŞ for the delivery of 1.1 million tons of LNG per year for ten years starting in 2027. Joffroy highlighted the benefits of this agreement, saying it “enables us to secure long-term sales and reduce our exposure to spot market gas price fluctuations.”
Furthermore, TotalEnergies has joined the Ruwais LNG project in the United Arab Emirates, acquiring a 10% stake. This project, launched by ADNOC in June 2024, will feature two liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 9.6 million tons per year. Expected to begin operations in the second half of 2028, the Ruwais LNG project is designed to be one of the world’s lowest-carbon intensity LNG plants, utilizing clean power from the UAE grid and the latest technologies to minimize emissions.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership with ADNOC, stating that the Ruwais LNG project “allows natural gas to fully play its role of transition fuel.”
TotalEnergies is a major player in the global LNG market, holding the third largest position globally. The company benefits from its integrated presence across the LNG value chain, encompassing production, transportation, access to regasification capacity in Europe, trading, and LNG bunkering.
