Fri Sep 20 06:18:38 UTC 2024: ## Shohei Ohtani Makes History, Japan Reacts with Pride

**TOKYO** – Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers star from Japan, has made history by becoming the first player in Major League Baseball to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. The achievement, reached with a seventh-inning homer in a 20-4 victory over the Marlins in Miami, has sparked widespread jubilation and admiration across Japan.

“We would like to congratulate him from the bottom of our heart,” said Yoshimasa Hayashi, top government spokesman, adding, “We sincerely hope Mr. Ohtani, who has already accomplished feat after feat and carved out a new era, will thrive further.”

The momentous news dominated Japanese morning news shows and social media. Newspapers rushed out special editions, including in Ohtani’s hometown of Iwate.

“He is amazing. Just amazing. I’m in awe,” said shopkeeper Keisuke Takahashi, whose Ginza store features photos and congratulatory posters dedicated to the baseball phenom.

Consultant Tamio Watabiki, 76, called Ohtani “a hero for Japan,” adding, “With all the gloomy news these days, his performance is the only thing that brightens my day and cheers everyone up.”

Yume Hareyama, a 23-year-old from Iwate, said Ohtani has made their region “famous and helped revitalise it.”

Social media users were equally captivated, with one user writing, “He is too incredible … truly superhuman.”

Ohtani, nicknamed “Sho-Time,” was a high-school baseball prodigy who signed with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013. He spent five seasons there before joining the Los Angeles Angels, where he won two American League Most Valuable Player awards. After signing the richest contract in North American sports history, he joined the Dodgers in December.

Ohtani’s extraordinary performance, including another home run in the ninth inning, has cemented his place as a global sporting icon and a source of immense pride for Japan.
