SYDNEY – Australia’s captain Harry Wilson has declared that sending James Slipper home a winner on his record-breaking 140th Test match is a major motivating factor for the Wallabies ahead of their Rugby Championship clash with New Zealand on Saturday.
Slipper, 35, will surpass George Gregan as Australia’s most-capped player when he enters the game as a substitute prop at Stadium Australia. Wilson expressed his admiration for Slipper’s dedication and commitment to the team, stating, “He’s been such a good person for Australian rugby and I really hope we can do him proud tomorrow.”
Despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding Slipper’s milestone, the Wallabies are facing a tough challenge against the All Blacks, who are hungry for a win after two consecutive losses to the Springboks.
“We’ve learned plenty of lessons from that record drubbing [against Argentina],” Wilson admitted, referring to their 67-27 defeat two weeks ago.
While the Wallabies are aiming for a victory to celebrate Slipper’s achievement, Wilson emphasized that the team is focused on the present and the process, rather than the overall outcome.
“There’ll be a little bit more on the line with the Bledisloe Cup,” he added. “But for us, it’s just winning the moment in front of us.”
A win on Saturday would keep alive the Wallabies’ hopes of reclaiming the Bledisloe Cup for the first time in over two decades. However, they would need to defeat the All Blacks again next week in Wellington to achieve this goal.
New Zealand captain Scott Barrett acknowledged the significance of the Bledisloe Cup for his team and stated that they are taking nothing for granted against the wounded Wallabies.
“Argentina at home, when they get their tails up, they’re a top-quality team,” Barrett said. “We’ve been on the receiving end of a couple of losses and we’re certainly hungry.”
The match promises to be a tense encounter as both teams strive for a victory that would bring them a much-needed boost in their Rugby Championship campaigns.
