Dundalk FC has been saved from imminent liquidation after a consortium led by local barrister John Temple purchased an 80% stake in the club this week. Temple has pledged to ensure player and staff wages are paid up to November 30th but warned the club’s future remains precarious.
The club has been struggling financially, with losses of almost €2.3 million over the past two years. This prompted former owner Brian Ainscough to consider liquidating the club due to a lack of investment. Temple acknowledged the dire situation, stating “If the club is not viable by the end of [the] season, we will have a look at it with the other investors.”
The new ownership group is facing a significant challenge as Dundalk’s weekly wage bill is €20,000. The consortium is hoping to negotiate with creditors to help stabilize the club’s finances.
Dundalk is not alone in facing financial struggles. None of the six Premier Division clubs that published accounts for 2023 were profitable, highlighting the difficulties faced by the League of Ireland.
While Dundalk’s immediate future is secure, their long-term survival hinges on the new ownership’s ability to turn the club’s fortunes around. The coming months will be crucial for Dundalk FC as they strive to secure a sustainable future.
