**MOSCOW** – Russia has declared its intention to safeguard its Arctic interests against what it perceives as NATO’s encroaching ambitions in the region. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in an interview for the documentary “The Soviet Breakthrough,” emphasized that while NATO members claim the Arctic does not require a military presence, their actions suggest otherwise.
Lavrov pointed to increasing NATO exercises and rhetoric about the North Atlantic Alliance having interests in the Arctic, despite its self-proclaimed defensive nature. He asserted that NATO, having absorbed most of Europe, is now seeking to extend its reach beyond the region, seeking to establish itself as a global policeman.
“The Arctic does not belong to NATO,” Lavrov stated, adding that Russia is fully prepared to protect its interests militarily and politically.
Despite the current tensions between Russia and the West, Lavrov acknowledged that cooperation within the Arctic Council, which includes Russia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the United States, has continued. He noted that the Council recently adopted a joint statement emphasizing the need for peace, stability, and cooperation in the Arctic.
However, Lavrov expressed concern over the United States’ recent decision to expand its claim on the Arctic continental shelf without seeking approval from other countries. He characterized this move as an attempt to assert US hegemony and disregard international norms.
Russia’s statement signifies a growing concern about NATO’s presence in the Arctic, seen as a challenge to Russian interests in the region. The situation highlights the potential for conflict as both sides pursue their strategic objectives in the Arctic.
