Fri Sep 20 06:50:44 UTC 2024: ## Rugby League Legend Mark Carroll Reveals CTE Struggle, Calls for Government Funding
**Sydney, Australia** – Manly Sea Eagles icon Mark Carroll has revealed the devastating effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) on his health, urging the Australian government to provide funding for research and support for those affected by the degenerative brain disease.
Carroll, known for his tough playing style during his 13-year NRL career, was diagnosed with CTE a few years ago. In a recent Instagram video, he addressed concerns from fans about changes in his voice, attributing them to the debilitating symptoms of the disease. “I’ve got anxiety,” he said, “I’m so tight right through the body and that’s what’s caused me this bloody throat (issue).”
Carroll, who has been undergoing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment, highlighted the lack of government support for CTE sufferers. “Excuse the pun, I’m taking this head on,” he stated. “This horrible disease, I’m taking it on, but typical…the government – we’re not covered (through) Medicare or any sorts of funds.”
The former NRL star emphasized that CTE is not limited to athletes, affecting others who have sustained head trauma, such as car crash survivors. “These guys are struggling, they are struggling worse than me,” he said. “They can’t afford this TMS. I feel for these people.”
Carroll’s public disclosure comes amid growing awareness of the dangers of concussion in rugby league. The NRL has introduced stricter concussion protocols, including a mandatory 11-day stand-down rule after a player sustains a concussion. However, Carroll’s plea for government support underscores the ongoing need for research and funding to better understand and treat CTE, a disease that continues to impact the lives of many.
