Fri Sep 20 06:38:54 UTC 2024: ## EY India Faces Backlash After Employee’s Death Attributed to Work Stress

Ernst & Young (EY) India is facing intense scrutiny following the death of one of its employees, Anna Sebastian Perayil, whose parents have publicly blamed the company’s work culture for her demise. In a letter addressed to EY Chairman and Managing Partner Rajiv Memani, Perayil’s parents alleged that their daughter succumbed to work-related stress, highlighting the company’s demanding work environment and lack of support for employees.

The letter, written by Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, detailed how her daughter faced overwhelming workload, long hours, and pressure to meet unrealistic deadlines, ultimately leading to anxiety, sleeplessness, and exhaustion. Augustine further criticized EY for not attending Anna’s funeral, expressing her deep disappointment at the company’s lack of empathy.

Memani, in a LinkedIn post, expressed his regret for missing the funeral and stated that Anna’s death had deeply affected him as a father. He affirmed his commitment to creating a healthy workplace and ensuring the well-being of employees.

Following the public outcry, EY issued a statement acknowledging the “irreparable loss” and reiterating their support for the family. The company has stated they are taking the allegations seriously.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has initiated an investigation into the allegations of an “unsafe and exploitative work environment” at EY India. The investigation will focus on examining the company’s work practices and whether they contributed to Anna’s death.

The incident has sparked a heated debate regarding workplace culture and the need for companies to prioritize employee well-being. As investigations continue, EY faces a significant challenge in addressing the allegations and rebuilding trust among its employees and stakeholders.
