French band Phoenix has released a new version of their iconic track “Nightcall,” featuring DJ-producer Kavinsky and Belgian singer Angèle. The song, originally written by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Kavinsky for the 2010 film “Drive,” was performed live by Phoenix during the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony.
The new rendition, produced by Phoenix and Kavinsky, features vocals from Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and Angèle. It was a massive hit with viewers, breaking the record for the most Shazams in a single day, reaching over a million.
The band performed several of their own hits at the Stade de France, including “Lisztomania” and “If I Ever Feel Better,” and were joined by fellow French band Air for “Playground Love.” Kavinsky and Angèle took the stage for their collaborative rendition of “Nightcall,” while Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend joined Phoenix for their song “Tonight.”
“We are infinitely happy to have had the chance to celebrate with all the athletes and the entire world at the closing of the Olympic Games in our beloved city of Paris,” said Phoenix in a statement. “It was a wonderful moment to have been invited to take the stage with our friends from France and around the world, honoring the French spirit and remaining true to our motto: Liberté, Égalité, Phoenix!”
The band’s most recent album, “Alpha Zulu,” was released in 2022. Last summer, they collaborated with Beck on the song “Odyssey” to coincide with their joint Summer Odyssey Tour.
