Fri Sep 20 06:32:07 UTC 2024: ## NZX Takes a Dip as Rebalancing Shakes Up Markets

**Wellington, New Zealand:** The New Zealand sharemarket closed down nearly 1.5% on Friday, driven by a volatile day of trading as index rebalancing shuffled stock prices. The S&P/NZX 50 Index fell 186.5 points to finish at 12,478.5, ending the week down nearly 2.8%.

The day’s activity saw heavy trading volume with 249.1 million transactions worth $776.79 million. Despite a sharp rebound on Wall Street, the NZX, along with Australian ASX, FTSE Russell and VanEck Exchange Trade Funds indices, all experienced quarterly rebalancing, creating a chaotic trading environment.

Harbour Asset Management portfolio manager Shane Solly described the day as “spring cleaning”, highlighting that the index changes created opportunities for patient investors as some stock prices swung significantly.

Auckland International Airport, which recently raised capital, saw its weighting on the NZX increase while other stocks, including Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Infratil, Chorus, Contact and Spark, saw their weightings reduced. There was speculation that Spark may fall out of some global indices.

Several other sectors also experienced volatility. Ryman Healthcare, Summerset Group, Synlait Milk and Comvita all saw declines. Serko, Vista Group, Skellerup, Smartpay and Blackpearl Group experienced notable drops.

The property sector saw Argosy, Property for Industry and Precinct decline. In the retail sector, KMD Brands, Hallenstein Glasson declined while The Warehouse saw an increase.

Positive movers on the day included Eroad, Port of Tauranga, a2 Milk, Ventia Services, Pacific Edge, Gentrack, Colonial Motor Co, Santana Minerals, Rakon and Restaurant Brands.

Blis Technologies, a probiotic manufacturer, went into a trading halt after becoming aware of a patent filing that could have a significant impact on the company. Rua Bioscience secured $150,000 through a share placement to address short-term working capital needs.

Overall, the day’s trading was characterized by significant volatility, reflecting the ongoing impact of index rebalancing and global economic conditions.
