Fri Sep 20 08:36:51 UTC 2024: ## Nike Turns to Veteran Exec Elliott Hill as New CEO Amidst Company Challenges

**BEAVERTON, OREGON -** In a move that signals a return to its roots, Nike has appointed veteran executive Elliott Hill as its new CEO, effective October 14th. Hill, who retired from the company in 2020, rejoins Nike after a successful 30-year career that began as an intern and culminated in his role as President – Consumer and Marketplace.

Hill’s appointment comes amidst a turbulent period for the sportswear giant, which has faced declining sales and strained relationships with key retailers. In an attempt to address these challenges, Nike has been undergoing a restructuring plan, including layoffs and a renewed focus on partnering with retailers.

Experts believe Hill’s deep understanding of Nike’s inner workings and its long-standing relationships could be instrumental in navigating these challenges. “A veteran insider like Elliott Hill brings a lot of valuable firsthand experience that could be useful in addressing Nike’s current challenges,” said David Daniels, an assistant professor of management and organization from the National University of Singapore.

However, Daniels also cautions that Hill’s deep-seated knowledge of the company’s traditional ways of operating might hinder his ability to implement bold, innovative strategies needed for a turnaround.

Despite this potential drawback, Peter Cappelli, a management and human resources professor from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, highlights the value of Hill’s extensive network within the company. “That depth… means you know who the people are already, who’s and who’s not. You also know what is worth preserving,” Cappelli stated.

Nike analyst Jim Duffy of Stifel Institutional expresses optimism about Hill’s return, predicting a revitalization of the Nike culture and an increased focus on innovation and product development.

Hill’s journey from intern to CEO mirrors the trajectory of Xerox’s former CEO, Ursula Burns, who also rose through the ranks to lead the company.

As Nike enters a new chapter, the company hopes Hill’s leadership and experience will be the key to navigating its current challenges and achieving sustainable growth.
