The US Coast Guard has released a chilling 3D animation depicting the final moments of the Titan submersible before its catastrophic implosion, which claimed the lives of all five individuals on board. The animation, part of a public hearing into the tragedy, provides a detailed account of the sub’s descent to the Titanic wreckage and its subsequent loss of communication.
The simulation shows the Titan submersible, carrying OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British-Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman, setting sail from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada on June 16th, 2023. Communication with the support vessel, the Polar Prince, was maintained through text messages during the dive, with the final message received at 10:47:27am NDT on June 18th, indicating the Titan had “dropped weights.”
Just five seconds later, all communication and tracking data from the submersible were lost, with the Titan’s location and depth at the time of the implosion confirmed as 41.73 degrees North latitude and 49.94 degrees West longitude at a depth of 3,346 meters.
Testimonies during the hearing have revealed serious concerns about the Titan’s safety and construction, with former employees raising alarms about the lack of third-party inspections and questionable engineering practices. David Lochridge, a former OceanGate employee, testified that he warned of potential safety issues with the submersible as early as 2018, stating that he had “no confidence whatsoever” in its construction and that he believed a catastrophic event was “inevitable.”
The hearing is ongoing and expected to last two weeks, with further testimonies and evidence anticipated to shed more light on the events leading up to the tragic implosion.
