**AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND** – Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka will kick off her 2025 tennis season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, marking her return to the city after an eight-year absence. Osaka, who took a 15-month break from the sport to welcome her daughter Shai, made her comeback earlier this year.
While her return has seen some mixed results, including early exits at major tournaments like the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, Osaka has shown signs of promise. Her best performance this year came at the Qatar Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
“I am looking forward to just embracing the nature of Auckland and of course, playing in a tournament that I have not played in for a long time,” Osaka said, expressing excitement about returning to the city. She recalled fondly her previous visit in 2017, where she enjoyed a helicopter tour and explored the beaches.
The ASB Classic Tournament Director, Nicolas Lamperin, expressed enthusiasm about hosting Osaka, who is currently ranked No. 76 in the world. “Naomi is one of the premier players in tennis, with an exciting and hard-hitting game,” Lamperin said. He acknowledged the challenges of returning to the sport after a lengthy break, but highlighted Osaka’s promising form and potential.
The four-time Grand Slam champion, who holds titles at the U.S. Open (2018 & 2020) and Australian Open (2019 & 2021), is considered a strong contender to reclaim her place among the tennis elite. Her journey towards that goal begins in Auckland, with the main draw play starting on December 30th, 2024.
