Fri Sep 20 06:19:00 UTC 2024: ## Malaysia’s King to Seek Chinese Funding for Stalled High-Speed Rail Project

**Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia** – Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, the reigning King of Malaysia, is set to visit Beijing this week, where he is expected to seek Chinese financial support for the revival of a stalled high-speed rail project connecting Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. The project, initially announced in 2013, was shelved in 2021 due to funding issues and disagreements.

According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Sultan Ibrahim will specifically target Chinese state-owned companies for investment in the 350-kilometer railway, which would cut travel time between the two cities to 90 minutes. The delegation accompanying the King includes representatives from YTL Corp., a Malaysian firm vying for a bid on the multibillion-dollar project.

The Sultan’s four-day visit to Beijing marks the first by a Malaysian monarch since 2014, symbolizing the “robust state of bilateral relations between Malaysia and China,” according to a statement released by the Malaysian Foreign Ministry. The visit will include meetings with both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, as well as celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The revival of the high-speed rail project has been a topic of discussion between the two countries since Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took office in November 2022. Anwar has expressed openness to the project under the condition of lowered costs or non-taxpayer funding. Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has also signaled willingness to engage in new proposals for the rail project.

The project is particularly appealing to the Sultan of Johor, who sees the increased connectivity between his state and Singapore as beneficial. The rail project is also seen as potentially boosting the chances of Forest City, a massive real estate development in Johor, becoming a major economic hub.

While the prospect of Chinese investment in the high-speed rail project is promising, it comes at a time of growing tensions between China and Malaysia in the South China Sea. This development could potentially impact the political landscape and influence the outcome of the negotiations for the rail project.
