**Santa Fe, NM** – Liz Steketee, a renowned photographer and mixed media artist, is showcasing her latest solo exhibition, “Remember This,” at the Jen Tough Gallery. The exhibition, running through October 27, 2024, delves into the complexities of human memory through a unique blend of photography, textiles, and collage.
“Remember This” presents a collection of Steketee’s work spanning several years, each piece exploring the ever-changing nature of memory and the influence of photography on this process. The exhibition draws from three distinct bodies of work: Ghost Books, Sewn Diary, and Entangled, all centered around the human experience of memory.
Steketee utilizes a fascinating combination of visual and physical memory. Photographs capture moments and offer visual recollections, while textiles embody physical memories embedded within their threads. The artist explains, “I believe we construct and edit memory over time. The combination of my photographs with collage and textiles has provided me with the ability to construct and mend my own memories.”
The exhibition features unique sculptural pieces created through a multi-step process. Steketee begins with a personal photo diary documenting her family and daily life, capturing visual memory. The images are then printed, cut, ripped, and rearranged in intuitive collages that reflect the fragmented nature of memory. Finally, the pieces are mended with thread and dyed, creating a tangible representation of her constructed memories.
Liz Steketee holds a BFA and MFA in photography, digital media, and mixed media. She has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute and dedicated her studio practice to exploring the relationship between photography, memory, and identity. “Remember This” is a captivating exhibition that invites viewers to reflect on their own memories and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the past.
