Sat Sep 21 04:52:30 UTC 2024: ## Gill Steadies India in Chennai as Bumrah’s Bowling Dominates

**Chennai, India:** Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in stabilizing India’s innings on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh, showcasing his composure and elegance at the crease. The young opener’s performance came after India’s top order suffered early setbacks, with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal falling cheaply to Bangladesh’s pace attack.

Gill, who endured a failure in the first innings, showed a significantly calmer approach this time around, adding crucial runs alongside Virat Kohli. The duo put on a 39-run partnership for the third wicket, with Gill’s standout moment being a powerful short-arm jab through covers off Nahid Rana.

However, Kohli’s dismissal late in the day, trapped leg-before by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 17, briefly stalled India’s progress. Nevertheless, Gill’s composed innings, including a magnificent pull shot that drew applause from KL Rahul in the dressing room, kept India firmly in control.

Earlier in the day, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance with the ball had left Bangladesh’s batting line-up in tatters, as India built a commanding overall lead of 308 runs by the end of Day 2. Bumrah’s masterful 4/50 was complemented by impressive performances from Mohammed Siraj (2/30), Akash Deep (2/19) in his Test debut, and Ravindra Jadeja (2/19). Bangladesh were bowled out for just 149 in response to India’s first-innings total of 376.

With a substantial 227-run first-innings lead, India ended Day 2 at 81/3, with Gill (33*) and Rishabh Pant (12*) steadying the innings. India’s bowlers will be looking to maintain the pressure with a similar performance in the second innings, as they target victory in the first Test.
