**Thiruvananthapuram, September 20, 2024:** Renowned Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday at the age of 79. Known for her portrayal of mothers in over 300 films spanning six decades, Ponnamma became synonymous with the role, often playing mothers to actors older than herself.

Though often typecast, Ponnamma explored the nuances of motherhood, bringing to life diverse characters, from the grieving and scheming to the playful mother. Her memorable performances included Narayani, the oracle’s wife in “Nirmalyam” (1973), who fiercely fights against poverty, and the heartbreaking role of Balan’s mother in “Thaniyavarthanam” (1987). She also shared a popular onscreen bond with Mohanlal, most notably as Sethu’s mother in “Kireedam.”

Ponnamma’s journey into cinema began at a young age as a singer in plays. She later transitioned to acting, debuting in “Sreerama Pattabhishekam” (1962) and securing her first mother role in “Thommante Makkal” just three years later. Ponnamma received four Kerala State Film Awards for Second Best Actor throughout her illustrious career.

In her final onscreen appearance in “Aanum Pennum” (2021), Ponnamma showcased a mischievous side, hinting at a potential beyond the motherly figure. Her passing leaves a void in Malayalam cinema, leaving audiences to wonder what other roles this versatile actress could have brought to life.
