**SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN -** Javier Bardem, renowned Spanish actor, announced he will star in “El Ser Querido,” the next film from acclaimed director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, while accepting his 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
The film, a father-daughter drama penned by Sorogoyen and his longtime collaborator Isabel Peña, will see Bardem opposite Vicky Luengo, known for Sorogoyen’s hit TV series “Riot Police.”
“El Ser Querido” centers on a successful film director and his estranged daughter, an unsuccessful actress, who reunite to make a film together, confronting a difficult past they’ve both tried to avoid.
The film is part of a slate of six auteur features announced by Movistar Plus+, a major Spanish pay TV-SVOD operator, which will ensure a high-profile production set to begin filming in January on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.
Bardem, known for his outspoken advocacy for human rights, was awarded the Donostia Award amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. He condemned Israel’s government for its attacks on Gaza, calling them “totally inadmissible, terrible, and dehumanizing.”
He urged global powers to reconsider their support for Israel and called for accountability from the International Criminal Court, stating that the Hamas attacks did not justify collective punishment of the Palestinian people.
While he found it difficult to celebrate in light of the current events, Bardem reflected on his evolution as an actor, describing a shift from method acting to a more nuanced approach, focusing on character development and finding a way to “exit” the role after filming.
He emphasized the importance of family and the values instilled in him by his mother, actress and activist Pilar Bardem, underscoring the legacy of activism and dedication to human rights that runs deep within his family.
