**New Delhi, India:** The Indian government has vehemently denied a Reuters report alleging that India failed to prevent European buyers from diverting Indian-made artillery shells to Ukraine. The report, published on Thursday, claimed that the transfer of ammunition had been ongoing for over a year, with India taking no action despite Moscow’s repeated protests.
India’s foreign ministry has called the report “speculative” and “misleading,” stating that it implies violations by India where none exist. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s “impeccable track record” of complying with international obligations on non-proliferation of arms and its robust export rules.
The report, citing unnamed Indian and European government and defence industry officials along with customs data, claimed that a small percentage of the ammunition used by Ukraine originated from India. The report also stated that Moscow had raised the issue with Delhi on at least two occasions, including during a meeting between the foreign ministers in July.
While India has maintained a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it has consistently emphasized the importance of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty. Despite Western pressure, India has continued to maintain close ties with Russia, which remains a crucial trade and defence partner.
The Indian government’s denial comes amidst heightened scrutiny of its arms export policies. In May, India tightened its export rules, requiring buyers to ensure that arms are not transferred to third countries. The Indian government maintains that it is committed to upholding its international obligations and will continue to implement its own strict export regulations.
