**[Location, KY] -** Days after a shooting spree on Interstate 75 left five people injured and a community on edge, retired couple Fred and Sheila McCoy took it upon themselves to help find the suspect. The McCoys, known for their YouTube channel dedicated to the Hatfield-McCoy feud, spent several days searching rugged terrain, ultimately discovering the body of Joseph Couch, the 32-year-old suspected shooter.
Couch, who had been on the run since the September 7th attack, is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Kentucky’s chief medical examiner.
“We turned into bounty hunters for a week,” Fred McCoy told the Associated Press. “The more we saw the news, the lockdowns, the school closings, the more we felt compelled to search for him.”
The McCoys, who live a couple of counties away from the shooting site, documented their search on YouTube, even livestreaming as they scoured the woods. In a video, Sheila McCoy can be heard saying, “Oh, Lord, this is nasty. Oh, my goodness, this is gross.” She then warns her husband to watch out for snakes. Moments later, they discovered the remains.
“Hey, guys, you won’t believe it, we found him, oh, my goodness gracious,” Sheila McCoy exclaimed in the video.
The couple, who had previously warned police and friends of their search, were livestreaming as a safety precaution in case they encountered Couch.
“We could have found him with a gun pointed at us,” Fred McCoy admitted.
The McCoys, both retired law enforcement officers, will receive the $25,000 reward offered for information leading to Couch’s capture. While their search was driven by a sense of civic duty, their efforts have brought a sense of closure to a community shaken by the random violence.
