Sat Sep 21 00:52:10 UTC 2024: ## Tirupati Laddu: A Sacred Sweet Caught in Political Controversy

The Tirupati laddu, a consecrated sweet from the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Andhra Pradesh, is a highly sought-after delicacy, enjoyed by devotees and dignitaries alike. Over a million laddus are sold every month, with the sweet often being gifted by politicians, including former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who presented them to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on multiple occasions.

The laddu’s popularity is such that during the 10-day Viakuntadwara Darshan last year, over 3.6 million laddus were sold. The temple also sent over 100,000 laddus in a cargo plane to Ayodhya for the Pran Prathistha of the Ram Mandir in January.

The laddu’s significance is further emphasized by its Geographical Indication (GI) certification, which recognizes its unique qualities and history dating back 500 years. Made exclusively by Sri Vaishnavites, the laddu’s distinct flavor and aroma come from a blend of boondhi, jaggery syrup, almonds, cashew nuts, raisins, and other ingredients.

However, recent controversies have cast a shadow on the beloved sweet. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu alleged that animal fat was used in the laddus during the YSRCP regime, sparking a political debate. YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy responded by accusing Naidu of trying to distract from his own governance. The central government has requested a detailed report from Naidu regarding the allegations.

While the controversy continues, the Tirupati laddu remains a symbol of devotion and tradition. The ongoing debate surrounding the laddu’s ingredients highlights the challenges faced by the temple authorities in maintaining quality and affordability while meeting the massive demand for this sacred sweet.
