**Mountain View, CA** – Google is taking another step towards a passwordless future with the launch of secure passkey syncing across multiple devices. This update, rolling out now to Chrome users on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, eliminates the need for QR code scanning and allows users to seamlessly access their passkeys on any device.
Previously, users could only save passkeys to their Google Password Manager on Android devices, requiring QR code scanning for other platforms. This new feature streamlines the process, automatically syncing passkeys across all linked devices. Users can now simply authenticate using their fingerprint or screen lock, enhancing convenience and security.
“This new syncing ability revolves around a new Google Password Manager PIN that adds another layer of security to the process, ensuring “your passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and can’t be accessed by anyone, not even Google,” said Chirag Desai, a Chrome product manager at Google.
Passkeys, developed in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, are considered significantly more secure than traditional passwords. They are resistant to phishing and other online attacks, leveraging biometric authentication for greater protection. This move towards passkey adoption is timely, considering recent research by NordPass highlighting the increasing sophistication of password cracking techniques employed by threat actors.
“The more cores they have — the more parallel tasks they can run at the same time,” said Gediminas Brencius, head of product growth at NordPass. “They employ a whole network of infected machines or use the most powerful computers to crack passwords.”
Passkeys are a significant step forward in online security. With this new update, Google is making them even more accessible and convenient, offering users a powerful alternative to traditional passwords and significantly bolstering online security.
