Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has revealed ambitious plans to transform the City Ground into a 50,000-capacity stadium, exceeding the club’s current plans to expand to 42,000.
Marinakis, who took over the club in 2017, emphasizes the need for a larger stadium to accommodate the growing fanbase and the long waiting list for season tickets. “We have a lot of supporters… I’m sure a 50,000-seat stadium will be full watching our team and our passion,” he told BBC East Midlands Today.
Earlier this year, the club faced uncertainty about their future at the City Ground after disagreements with Nottingham City Council over rent demands. However, a deal to sell the land to Forest in July secured the Reds’ long-term presence at their home for 126 years.
The Greek shipping magnate reaffirmed his commitment to developing the City Ground as the club’s primary stadium. “That is where the team belongs and where the tradition is,” Marinakis stated. “It’s most important for the town of Nottingham and this is something I want to be able to finalise and for the years to come to have one of the best stadiums in England.”
This ambitious project comes after Forest’s previous plans to expand to 42,000 by rebuilding the Peter Taylor Stand and extending the Bridgford Stand. While the 50,000-seat stadium remains a long-term goal, the immediate focus is on securing the club’s future at the City Ground and creating a modern and impressive home for the passionate Nottingham Forest fanbase.
