Florence Pugh, known for her roles in films like “Midsommar,” has opened up about the “bizarre” and “traumatic” experience of shaving her head for her new role in A24’s “We Live in Time.” The actress, who plays a chef receiving a shocking medical diagnosis in the film, admitted to British Vogue that the experience left her feeling “sensitive” and “cold all the time.”
“In many religions, hair is the most precious thing on the body,” Pugh explained, “it’s where you store your memories and your dreams and your history. [Shaving] it was really bizarre.”
Despite the challenges, Pugh emphasized the importance of the act for her character: “For any actor taking a role like this, it is completely important that you see her head and we see her shaving it – it was just always a no-brainer.”
Pugh’s co-star, Andrew Garfield, who shaved her head onscreen, described the experience as “terrifying” but ultimately “beautiful and intimate.” He praised Pugh’s bravery and assured the magazine that “thank God she has such a nicely shaped melon.”
The interview also saw Pugh address the online criticism she often faces regarding her appearance. “It’s so hard,” she said, “It’s really painful to read people being nasty about my confidence or nasty about my weight. It never feels good.”
Pugh emphasized her commitment to authenticity: “The one thing I always wanted to achieve was to never sell someone else something that isn’t the real me.”
