Fri Sep 20 06:46:27 UTC 2024: ## EU President Von der Leyen Visits Kyiv, Pledges Support for Ukraine’s Upcoming Winter

**Kiev, Ukraine** – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on Friday, pledging sustained European support for Ukraine as the country prepares for a difficult winter. Her visit comes amid growing concerns about the impact of Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“My 8th visit to Kyiv comes as the heating season starts soon, and Russia keeps targeting energy infrastructure,” von der Leyen said on social media. “We will help Ukraine in its brave efforts. I come here to discuss Europe’s support. From winter preparedness to defence, to accession and progress on the G7 loans.”

The EU chief will discuss energy supply assistance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later today. To further support Ukraine’s efforts, the EU will provide an additional €160 million ($178 million) to repair damaged energy infrastructure, expand renewable energy, and finance shelters.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that the upcoming winter could be the most challenging yet for Ukraine. As Russia escalates its attacks on power plants, heating facilities, and transmission networks, Ukraine’s energy infrastructure faces immense pressure. The IEA highlights that strains manageable in the summer months may become unbearable as temperatures drop and supplies of heat and water falter. This could lead to further displacement of affected populations within Ukraine and abroad.

Von der Leyen’s visit emphasizes the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression, particularly as the country faces a critical winter ahead.
