**LONDON** – A new global survey conducted by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) reveals concerning misconceptions about dementia, with a staggering 80% of the public believing it is a normal part of aging. This alarming statistic suggests that people with dementia may be facing delayed diagnoses and inadequate care.
The survey, released ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day on Saturday, also found that 65% of medical and care professionals shared this misconception. The data was collected from 40,000 respondents across 116 countries, including Japan.
“The need for a correct diagnosis and care for people with dementia is crucial,” stressed ADI CEO Paola Barbarino. “Dementia is a medical condition caused by a set of diseases, Alzheimer’s being the most common. A timely diagnosis opens doors to a range of treatments, care, and support, enabling people to live longer, healthier lives and remain active in their communities.”
The survey highlights the urgency for greater awareness and understanding of dementia. By dispelling myths and providing accurate information, healthcare professionals can play a vital role in ensuring proper diagnosis and care for those living with this debilitating condition.
