**Changzhou, China:** Indian shuttler Malvika Bansod’s journey at the China Open came to an end on Friday after a straight-sets defeat to two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old, ranked 43rd in the world, fell to the fourth-seeded Japanese star in a match lasting just 35 minutes, with the final scoreline reading 10-21, 16-21.
This marks Malvika’s third consecutive loss to Yamaguchi, the former world No. 1. Despite a valiant effort, Malvika couldn’t overcome Yamaguchi’s dominance, especially in the opening game where the Japanese raced to an eight-point lead and ultimately secured a comfortable 21-10 victory. The second game was closer, with Malvika staying competitive until the score reached 15-all, but Yamaguchi ultimately showcased her class to close out the match.
Malvika’s defeat marks the end of India’s challenge at the Super 1000 tournament. However, she had earlier secured a memorable win in the round of 16, defeating two-time Commonwealth Games medalist and world No. 25 Kristy Gilmour from Scotland.
