Fri Sep 20 04:41:36 UTC 2024: ## Blue Jays Outright Catcher Brian Serven to Triple-A Buffalo

**Toronto, ON** – The Toronto Blue Jays have designated catcher Brian Serven for assignment and have now outrighted him to their Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo. The move comes after the team acquired Tyler Heineman on waivers earlier this week.

Serven has spent the majority of the season in Buffalo, hitting a respectable .265/.390/.379 with three home runs in 40 games. He appeared in 28 MLB contests for the Jays this season, but struggled offensively with a .179/.243/.222 slash line. While not a standout hitter, Serven is highly regarded for his defensive abilities, with strong metrics in 730 career innings behind the plate.

His future with the Jays is uncertain, as he is eligible for free agency and could choose to explore other options. However, his defensive reputation is likely to land him a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite.

The move has sparked debate among fans, with some expressing disappointment over Serven’s departure, particularly in light of his apparent synergy with pitcher Bowden Francis. Francis has enjoyed success this season, attributing it in part to the addition of a splitter to his arsenal, a pitch that Serven seemed to handle well.

Others, however, have pointed out that Serven’s offensive limitations and the team’s need for a third catcher make the decision understandable.

The Blue Jays now have a surplus of catchers with Heineman joining Gabriel Moreno and Danny Jansen on the roster. It remains to be seen how the team will manage their catching situation going forward, with only nine games remaining in the regular season.
