Sat Sep 21 03:50:45 UTC 2024: ## Afghanistan Clinch ODI Series Victory Against South Africa
**Sharjah, UAE:** Afghanistan celebrated a historic ODI series win against South Africa on Friday, securing victory with a game to spare. The resounding 177-run triumph marks the first time Afghanistan has won an ODI series against the Proteas.
The match saw a blistering performance from Afghanistan, who set a formidable target of 311-4 thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s impressive century. Gurbaz, who smashed 105 off 110 balls, became the first Afghan man to reach seven ODI hundreds, showcasing his power and precision.
Azmatullah Omarzai, who remained unbeaten on 86 off 50 balls, further propelled Afghanistan towards a dominant victory. He, along with Rahmat Shah (50 runs), guided Afghanistan to a remarkable 93 runs in the final 10 overs.
South Africa’s bowling attack struggled in the oppressive heat, with only Bjorn Fortuin and Aiden Markram providing some respite.
In reply, South Africa’s chase faltered despite a promising start. Temba Bavuma, returning from illness, scored 38 and formed a 73-run opening partnership with Tony de Zorzi.
However, the Proteas suffered a dramatic collapse, losing seven wickets for just 39 runs. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan, celebrating his 26th birthday, delivered a stellar performance, claiming 5-19, while Nangeyalia Kharote snagged 4-26.
“It was a great opportunity for us to win the series against a big team,” said Rashid Khan, who played through a hamstring injury. “It was great to see youngsters like Kharote and Ghazanfar showcasing their talent against South Africa.”
South African captain Temba Bavuma acknowledged his team’s poor performance: “Not a good enough performance. We were not able to take 10 wickets and that’s a conversation we need to have.”
With the victory, Afghanistan has taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The final ODI is scheduled for Sunday.
