**Umuahia, Abia State** – Abia State has announced its participation in the international World Clean-Up Day, observed on September 20th. The initiative, spearheaded by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), aligns with the current administration’s focus on transforming waste management practices in the state.
According to the General Manager/Chief Executive of ASEPA, Ogbonnia Okereke, the state has made significant strides in tackling the waste crisis that plagued Abia for years. He highlights Governor Alex Otti’s declaration of a state of emergency on waste management upon assuming office, leading to a rapid cleanup of major cities and towns.
“The importance of a clean and healthy environment cannot be overstated,” Okereke emphasizes. “Prior to this administration, Aba and Umuahia were notorious for being overrun by waste, threatening the health of our citizens.”
ASEPA is actively promoting a comprehensive approach to waste management, including the adoption of the United Nations Zero Waste Agenda and the Circular Economy Model. This involves moving beyond traditional recycling practices and incorporating the “12 Rs” to transform waste into valuable resources.
The agency urges citizens to actively participate in keeping the environment clean by using biodegradable materials for waste disposal, avoiding illegal dumping, paying sanitation fees, and supporting recycling initiatives.
“Abia State is rapidly shedding its former image as one of Nigeria’s dirtiest states,” Okereke states confidently. “Our administration is dedicated to positioning Abia as one of the cleanest states in the country.”
With the collective effort of Ndi Abia, the state aims to achieve its vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Abia.
