**Kochi, September 20, 2024:** Renowned Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday evening at the age of 80. She was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi earlier this month after her health deteriorated. Ponnamma had been battling cancer since it was diagnosed in May, and the disease had reached its fourth stage.
Ponnamma, known for her endearing portrayals of mothers and grandmothers, began her acting career in the early 1960s, transitioning from stage to screen. She had a prolific career spanning over six decades, featuring in numerous films and television serials. She won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Supporting Actress four times.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan expressed their condolences, recognizing Ponnamma’s contributions to Malayalam cinema. Vijayan highlighted her commendable roles in popular dramas and films, while Satheesan lauded her portrayal of affectionate mothers and her infectious smile, which endeared her to audiences.
Ponnamma’s body will be kept at the Kalamassery Municipal Town Hall on Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon for members of the public to pay their respects. Her cremation will be held at her residence in Aluva.
