Thu Sep 19 08:56:06 UTC 2024: ## US Senator Van Hollen Criticizes Israel’s Actions in Gaza Conflict, Calls for Stronger US Leverage

**Washington, D.C.** – Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has voiced concerns over the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions and calling for stronger US leverage to achieve a ceasefire and hostage release.

Speaking on MSNBC’s “All In,” Van Hollen highlighted the Biden administration’s efforts to de-escalate the conflict and secure the release of hostages. However, he expressed frustration with Netanyahu’s disregard for US objectives, claiming that the Israeli Prime Minister prioritizes his political survival and allegiance to his extremist government over US interests.

Van Hollen stated that the recent Israeli strike on a Syrian compound, which prompted Iranian missile attacks, “could trigger escalation” and drag the US into the conflict. He emphasized that while the US has been assisting Israel in intercepting Iranian missiles, a wider escalation would be detrimental to US objectives.

Regarding Senator Bernie Sanders’ proposed resolution to disapprove of $20 billion in arms sales to Israel, Van Hollen indicated his support for using US leverage to force Netanyahu to negotiate. He stressed that the US-Israel partnership cannot be one-sided, and the US should not be providing Israel with a “blank check” for offensive weapons.

Van Hollen argued that US taxpayer dollars should be tied to US objectives and values, and Israel should not be rewarded for disregarding US requests and demands. He suggested that the Biden administration is not using all the tools at its disposal to exert leverage and advocated for a more strategic approach to US-Israel relations.

While not endorsing a complete arms embargo, Van Hollen expressed support for pausing offensive weapons transfers to Israel and utilizing all available diplomatic tools to achieve a peaceful resolution. He emphasized that the US should not provide a “blank check” for weapons, and its partnership with Israel must be based on mutual respect and shared objectives.
