**METAMORA, IL** – The Grebner name is synonymous with Metamora football. For generations, the family has been deeply intertwined with the Redbirds, a tradition that continues with head coach Jared Grebner and his son, senior wide receiver/defensive back Avery.
Avery, who grew up watching his father and uncles play for Metamora, remembers being captivated by the game from a young age. “Every Friday I’d go watch the games,” he said. “We’d sit in the same spot under the ‘M’ on the Malone Field sign. That was our family place.” His childhood memories are filled with stories of his father’s success as a quarterback for the Redbirds, including a memorable state title game appearance in 1996.
Jared, who followed in the footsteps of his uncle Jim Garber, the quarterback for Metamora’s 1975 state championship team, says the family’s connection to the program runs deep. “Metamora football is a community endeavor,” he stated. “The community takes great pride in the program.”
The Grebner family legacy extends beyond the field. Jared, who initially pursued a career in pharmacy, ultimately found his passion in coaching and teaching at his hometown school. He says he was drawn back to Metamora football, where he now leads the program his son plays for.
While Jared maintains a professional distance as coach, he acknowledges the special dynamic of coaching his son. “I treat him like any other player,” he said. “We have a great dynamic, I know what motivates him and what he can handle.”
For Avery, playing for his father has been a rewarding experience. “I love the brotherhood of the team, I love the coaching staff and playing for my dad,” he said. “My dad has been a great coach and a great father. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
As the season comes to a close, the Grebner family’s journey with Metamora football will continue. Jared will continue to guide the program, while Avery prepares for the next chapter in his athletic career. The Redbird legacy, however, will endure, passed down from generation to generation.
