Thu Sep 19 07:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Rural Schools Lag Behind in Digital Education, Says UMS Vice-Chancellor

**KOTA KINABALU:** The digital divide between rural and urban schools is hindering students and educators from reaching their full potential, according to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.

Speaking at the Rural Education International Conference at UMS on Thursday (Sept 19), Prof Kasim stressed the urgency of empowering digital education in rural areas. “Without it, rural students will be left behind in the digital era,” he warned.

He emphasized the need for creative and innovative solutions to bridge the gap, allowing all students to benefit from the wonders of technology in their learning journey. Prof Kasim believes that digital development is crucial for elevating education in rural areas, as the two aspects complement each other.

“Digital tools can bridge access to quality education and connect even the most remote communities to resources, information, and skills that were once considered unattainable,” he explained.

The conference aims to provide a platform for participants to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations to overcome these challenges. Prof Kasim expressed his hope that the event would explore ways to fully utilize the potential of digital technology to create inclusive, fair, and sustainable education opportunities for all.

Acknowledging the vital role of educators in this transformation, Prof Kasim emphasized the importance of equipping them with the right tools, knowledge, and skills to effectively leverage technology in their teaching. He believes that investing in human resources is equally crucial as building infrastructure to empower rural education in the digital age.
