**MANILA, PHILIPPINES** – The US has decided to keep its Mid-Range Capability (MRC) missile launcher, nicknamed “Typhoon,” permanently stationed in the Philippines despite China’s strong objections. The mobile launch system, capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 1,500 miles, was initially deployed in April for joint military exercises with the Philippines.

China has repeatedly condemned the deployment, accusing the US of undermining peace and stability in the region and stoking an arms race. The system’s presence within striking distance of China’s eastern seaboard and artificial islands in the South China Sea has particularly raised Beijing’s ire.
