**Jakarta, September 17, 2024** – Indonesia has become the first country in Southeast Asia, and the third globally, to implement YouTube Shopping, a feature that allows users to make purchases directly within the platform. The launch signifies YouTube’s commitment to tapping into Indonesia’s booming digital economy, which is currently the largest in the region.
“We knew Indonesia had to be the first Southeast Asian country [to launch YouTube Shopping],” said Ajay Vidyasagar, YouTube’s APAC Regional Director. “Indonesia has a huge number of YouTube channels with over 2,000 channels having more than a million subscribers.”
The feature, which is integrated with e-commerce platform Shopee, leverages the influence of content creators to drive purchases. According to Google research, 78% of Indonesian YouTube viewers are influenced by recommendations from creators, with 91% trusting them to provide accurate product information.
Monica Vionna, Senior Director of Marketing Growth at Shopee Indonesia, expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating that it will allow Shopee to reach a wider audience. The partnership does not require any regulatory changes, ensuring a smooth integration.
“When clicked on YouTube, the transaction page automatically redirects to Shopee,” she explained.
Following its success in Indonesia, YouTube Shopping is expected to be launched in Thailand and Vietnam within the next few weeks.
The launch of YouTube Shopping in Indonesia highlights the growing significance of social commerce in the region. As platforms like YouTube increasingly integrate e-commerce features, consumers are provided with more convenient and personalized shopping experiences.
