During a Trump town hall event in Flint, Michigan, Sanders claimed that Harris lacked a source of “humility” because she did not have biological children. Harris is a stepmother to two children, Ella and Cole, with her husband, Doug Emhoff.

Sanders’ remarks mirror the views of Republican Senate candidate JD Vance, who has made numerous controversial statements about those without children. In 2021, Vance claimed that childless individuals have “no physical commitment to the future of this country.” He went on to call Democratic leaders, including Harris, “miserable” and part of a “corporate oligarchy” that “wants to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

Vance’s comments have been widely condemned as misogynistic and offensive, and were even mentioned at this year’s Emmy Awards. Despite facing criticism, Vance has argued his comments were taken out of context.
