Federated Farmers, the leading advocate for New Zealand’s primary sector, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The organization, formed from the merger of the New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Association and the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, has a rich history of representing farmers and advocating for their interests.
Today, on The Country radio show, host Jamie Mackay interviewed current president Wayne Langford, former president Katie Milne, and David Acland, a descendent of one of Feds’ founding members, Henry Acland.
Langford reflected on the 125 years of Feds’ advocacy and spoke about his vision for the future of the organization. He emphasized the importance of the primary sector in New Zealand’s economy and its role in overcoming current economic challenges.
The interview also highlighted the contributions of past Feds presidents, including Katie Milne, who became the first female president in 2017. She navigated the organization through the Mycoplasma bovis and Covid-19 crises.
A special focus was given to David Acland, who shared the story of his family’s involvement in the founding of Feds. His grandfather’s uncle was a member of the original New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Association, a key precursor to Federated Farmers.
The interview also featured Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who expressed his appreciation for the vital role of the primary sector. He believes that farmers will be instrumental in leading the country out of its current economic situation.
Furthermore, the radio program discussed the latest dairy market updates with Fonterra reporting a positive GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction, and a significant investment in a new cool store at its Whareroa site in Taranaki.
The 125th anniversary of Federated Farmers is a testament to the enduring power of collective action and the vital role farmers play in New Zealand’s economy and identity. The organization continues to be a strong voice for the primary sector, advocating for its interests and ensuring its continued success.
