The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has issued a stark warning, stating that climate change will exacerbate childhood malnutrition and disease, putting millions more children at risk by 2050. The foundation’s annual Goalkeepers report, “A Race to Nourish a Warming World,” highlights the urgent need for global action.
The report projects that, without intervention, climate change will cause an additional 40 million children to suffer from stunting and 28 million from wasting by 2050. This comes on top of the current figures, with the World Health Organization reporting 148 million children stunted and 45 million wasted in 2023.
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and the foundation, emphasized that malnutrition is a complex issue extending beyond food shortages. He stressed that inadequate diets also contribute significantly to the problem.
The report points to African countries as particularly vulnerable, where foreign aid for nutrition programs has declined significantly since 2010. The foundation argues that investing in childhood nutrition is not only a humanitarian imperative but also an economic necessity, as malnutrition hinders physical and cognitive development, leading to significant economic losses for low-income countries.
The report advocates for solutions such as adopting new agricultural technologies, fortifying staple foods, and providing prenatal vitamins to combat malnutrition and its devastating effects.
“Investing in nutrition is the best way to fight the effects of climate change,” wrote Gates in the report. He urged global leaders to prioritize addressing this crisis by increasing global health spending and focusing on economic growth.
“Given that resources are so limited, what are the things that should be done to help these children?” Gates asked. “That’s the human lens that we need to apply to: ‘If I care about climate change, what am I doing to help?'”
