Langenburg, Saskatchewan, is known for its farming community, but it also holds a unique place in Canadian folklore – as the site of a widely reported UFO sighting in 1974. Now, the 50th anniversary of this event is being celebrated with a commemorative coin issued by Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint.
The coin, part of the “Canada’s Unexplained Phenomena” series, depicts the moment Edwin Fuhr, a local farmer, spotted five unidentified flying objects while working his canola field. According to his brother Leo, who arrived at the scene shortly after, the encounter left behind five distinct, doughnut-shaped imprints in the grass, suggesting the objects were hovering just above the field.
Leo, now 85, still vividly remembers the day and points to the exact spot where the imprints appeared. The RCMP investigation at the time corroborated the brothers’ account, concluding that the circles were caused by a “heavy air or exhaust pressure” exerted by something unidentified.
The Langenburg Event coin has sparked renewed interest in the 1974 incident, prompting discussions and remembrances. While some remain skeptical, others are captivated by the tale, which has become part of the town’s identity.
“It kind of put the community on the map for a while,” said former RCMP officer Ron Morier, who investigated the UFO sighting. “It was a bit baffling. I’d never in my career up to that point had to investigate anything like this, so it was not your everyday investigation,” Morier added.
The coin is a tangible reminder of the enduring mystery surrounding the Langenburg UFO sighting, a story that continues to fascinate and intrigue generations later.
