Wed Sep 18 17:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Boeing and Union Remain Deadlocked After Frustrating Mediation Session

**SEATTLE, Sept. 18 (Xinhua)** – Contract negotiations between Boeing Co. and its largest union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 751, remain stalled after a frustrating first round of mediation. The talks aim to end a strike that began last week, bringing production to a halt at Boeing factories across the Seattle area.

The union expressed disappointment after a full day of mediation, stating that Boeing “was not prepared and was unwilling to address the issues” deemed essential to ending the strike: wages and pensions.

Despite facing a dire financial situation, Boeing’s initial offer of a 25 percent pay increase over four years was overwhelmingly rejected by workers who are demanding higher raises and the reinstatement of their pensions.

The company’s CFO, Brian West, acknowledged the financial strain caused by the strike, stating that Boeing is eager to resolve the situation. This week, the company announced plans to implement sweeping cost-cutting measures in response to the ongoing financial pressure.

The strike comes at a challenging time for Boeing, which has been grappling with quality lapses, supplier shortages, and a near-catastrophic accident in January. These issues have significantly impacted the company’s cash position, with Boeing burning through over 8 billion dollars in the first half of the year.

The two sides are set to continue negotiations on Wednesday.
