**Chennai:** R. Ashwin played a pivotal role in India’s recovery in the first Test against Bangladesh, smashing his sixth Test century and guiding the team to a strong total of 334/6 at stumps on Day 1.

India’s innings started disastrously, losing early wickets of Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (6). However, a crucial 190-run partnership between Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 83 runs off 109 balls, revived the innings.

Ashwin, batting at No. 8, reached his century off 108 balls, hitting 10 fours and 2 sixes. This is his sixth Test century and ties him with Daniel Vettori for the most centuries at No. 8 in Test cricket.

Ashwin’s father, who was present in the stands, witnessed his son’s stellar performance.

The partnership between Jadeja and Ashwin broke several records, highlighting their crucial contribution to the team’s strong score.

Despite the initial setback, India managed to recover thanks to the efforts of Ashwin and Jadeja, who provided a much-needed boost to the team’s total. Yshasvi Jaiswal also played a vital role, contributing a half-century of 56 runs off 118 balls.

Bangladesh, who won the toss and elected to bowl, will be hoping to make a strong comeback on Day 2.
