Squadron Leader Mohana Singh has etched her name in history as the first woman fighter pilot to join the elite 18 ‘Flying Bullets’ squadron, operating India’s indigenously built LCA Tejas fighter jet. This achievement underscores the Indian Air Force’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment.
Singh, one of the first female fighter pilots in India, has previously flown MiG-21s and was recently posted to the LCA squadron deployed in Naliya air base in Gujarat. During a recent exercise, ‘Tarang Shakti’ in Jodhpur, she was part of a historic flight with the Vice Chiefs of the three armed forces, even instructing them on the intricacies of flying the LCA Tejas.
The exercise, which witnessed the participation of top air forces from around the world, showcased the defense forces’ commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This flight, with Singh at the helm of the LCA Tejas, marked a significant moment in India’s journey towards a more inclusive and modern air force.
Singh’s two fellow female fighter pilots, Squadron Leader Bhawna Kanth and Squadron Leader Avni Chaturvedi, are currently flying the Su-30 MKI fighter jets. The Indian Air Force has witnessed a surge in female fighter pilots since the government opened the fighter stream for women in 2016, with approximately 20 women currently serving in the role.
