Tue Sep 17 01:54:02 UTC 2024: ## India Reports Second Fatal Nipah Virus Case This Year

**Malappuram, India** – India has reported its second fatal Nipah virus case this year, with the death of a 24-year-old student in the district of Malappuram. The man, who had traveled from Bengaluru, developed symptoms on September 4th and passed away five days later.

The National Institute of Virology confirmed the Nipah virus infection on September 9th. Health officials have identified 151 contacts for monitoring, and five individuals with symptoms are currently undergoing testing. The source of the man’s infection is still unclear.

The Nipah virus is spread by fruit bats and can also be transmitted from person-to-person. The virus is known for its high fatality rate, and currently, there are no specific treatments or vaccines available. This case follows a similar Nipah virus death in July, involving a 14-year-old boy who contracted the virus after eating hog plum fruit.

The recent cases highlight the ongoing threat of Nipah virus, particularly in regions with high bat populations. Health authorities in India are closely monitoring the situation and taking precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.
