**Malappuram, Kerala:** A 24-year-old student has succumbed to Nipah virus infection, prompting health authorities in Kerala to declare containment zones and implement strict protocols to prevent further spread.
The deceased, who had previously recovered from jaundice, returned to Kerala after a road accident and developed a fever. His death in a private hospital sparked suspicion of Nipah virus, leading to the collection of samples and confirmation by the Pune National Virology Institute.
Health Minister Veena George confirmed the diagnosis and convened an emergency meeting to address the situation. 16 committees have been formed to manage the crisis, and 151 individuals who were in contact with the deceased are being monitored. Five individuals in isolation have displayed mild symptoms and their samples have been sent for testing.
The Minister assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, highlighting the ongoing contact tracing and monitoring efforts to prevent further spread.
Following the confirmation, District Collector V.R. Vinod has declared containment zones in Thiruvali and Mampad panchayats, including specific wards. Strict protocols will be enforced in these areas, and the Nabi Day procession has been rescheduled to a later date.
The Collector has urged residents to remain vigilant and wear masks as a precautionary measure.
