**Malappuram, Kerala:** A 24-year-old man has died due to Nipah virus infection in Malappuram, Kerala, prompting health authorities to launch an emergency response. The man, a student in Bengaluru, succumbed to the disease at a private hospital on Saturday.

Following his death, samples were sent to Kozhikode Medical College, which confirmed encephalitis, and subsequently to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, which confirmed Nipah infection.

The deceased had contact with a large number of people, leading to the identification of 151 primary contacts. These individuals, including those who travelled with him, have been isolated as a precautionary measure.

Five individuals from the group have shown mild symptoms and their samples are currently being tested.

Health Minister Veena George has convened an emergency meeting, instructing authorities to implement all necessary protocols to prevent further spread of the virus.

“The health department is taking early detection and treatment measures to save lives and prevent further infections,” said Ms. George, assuring the public.

The case has triggered concerns as Nipah virus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. The health department is closely monitoring the situation and is taking all necessary steps to contain its spread.
