The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has unveiled a revamped Asian Champions League Elite, aiming to revitalize football in the region and attract new investment. The top tier of the competition kicks off on Monday with a reduced field of 24 teams, featuring champions from Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and defending champion Al-Ain from the United Arab Emirates.
The tournament boasts a new format, trophy, logo, and a tripling of the prize money for the champion. The winning team will now stand to pocket up to $12 million after the final on May 4th.
“The revamped Asian Champions League Elite will play a crucial role in encouraging new investment in the continent’s clubs,” said the AFC’s most senior official. The increased prize money and revamped format are expected to attract greater interest from investors and sponsors, further boosting the competition’s profile and attracting top talent.
