**Kolkata, India:** The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mandal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital. The arrests were made on charges of delaying the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) and destroying evidence, thereby obstructing the investigation.
Ghosh, who was previously arrested by the CBI in a separate case involving financial irregularities, is currently under judicial custody until September 23.
The CBI conducted two rounds of polygraph tests on Ghosh on August 26 as part of their investigation.
The victim’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9, with autopsy reports revealing she had been brutally raped before being murdered. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10.
Following the incident, doctors have been protesting demanding justice for the trainee doctor. On Tuesday, they began a sit-in outside Swasthya Bhavan, the state health department headquarters, with five demands including holding all individuals responsible for the rape and murder, as well as any destruction of evidence, accountable. They also demanded strict disciplinary action against Ghosh, the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, and Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam.
Last week, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to submit a progress report on their investigation within three weeks. The report is due to be presented before the court on September 17.
